Mid-Sioux Opportunity takes action Cherokee County

Thank you for your generous support of the
Cherokee County Fund Drive!
Mid-Sioux Opportunity, Inc. is a non-profit Community Action Agency that helps fight poverty by assisting low-income families to become more self-sufficient. Mid-Sioux administers several programs. Those programs include: Family Development and Self-Sufficiency (FaDSS) program, Child Care Resource and Referral, Women, Infant, and Children's (WIC) program, Maternal/Child Health, Head Start/Early Head Start, and Weatherization and the Low-income Home Energy Assistance (LiHEAP) program.

All of these programs are designed to help families and children grow through educational, health, and financial assistance. The outreach offices take applications for many of these programs, as well as offering crisis assistance, special projects, and food pantries in the Cherokee and Sioux Center offices. Special projects done by the outreach offices include the Back to School program and the Holiday Families program.

The Cherokee County outreach office is located in Cherokee at 921 South 2nd Street. Nicole Mier is the Outreach Coordinator for Cherokee and Plymouth counties and she is available in the Cherokee office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and you can reach her on those days at (712) 225-3322.

The money Mid-Sioux Opportunity receives from the Cherokee County Fund Drive goes in the Cherokee County Crisis Fund which means the money you donate stays in Cherokee County. Crisis Funds may be used to pay a portion of rent, utilities, food, or other bills to help families in Cherokee County in a crisis situation. The goal for the use of this years donations is to have the ability to assist as many low-income families as possible with their crisis situations as they arise.

In addition to community financial support, there are many other ways people are encouraged to help. Donations of food or household supplies are always appreciated. Items that are always useful in the food pantry are: peanut butter, hamburger helpers, spaghetti noodles and sauce, canned tuna, canned fruit and vegetables. Mid-Sioux also welcomes volunteers to help in the office with answering phones or picking up donated meat from area meat lockers. Meier adds, “Thank you to the Cherokee Community for all their support it has been greatly appreciated and it is wonderful to be a part of this community.”
