Cherokee County Fund Drive! |
Council on Aging supports three senior citizen groups throughout Cherokee County on an annual basis. The three groups meet regularly each month and sometimes weekly. The groups consist of people ages 55 and older who get together for activities, fellowship, and to have a generally good time in each other’s company. Activities might include playing cards, arts and crafts, potluck dinners, as well as community service activities.
Currently there are three groups that meet regularly in the county, Cherokee (The Good Times Place), Cleghorn, and Quimby. Each group meets at their town’s community center or building each of which charges rent to use the facility. This is where the Cherokee Community Fund Drive and the Council on Aging come in. The funds that the Council on Aging receives from the fund drive help support those groups by helping pay for the building fees as well as other supplies or activities.
According to Lorna Olson, Treasurer of Council on Aging for Cherokee County, around 100-125 senior citizens are served each month through these groups. The groups provide a place for senior citizens to go and be active and even network about various issues affecting their lives. Staying active and whether physically or mentally is key to maintaining health for anyone, but it is essential for senior citizens. Olson says she has chosen to serve this organization because she wants to help older people and she enjoys being around other people rather than staying at home. She also adds that in addition to helping financially through the Cherokee County Fund Drive people can simply help by joining the groups and participating.
According to a report from the National Council on Aging these senior centers are an underutilized resource for health professionals to get the word out about good information regarding senior health issues. There are over 11,000 senior centers nationwide serving 1 million people. To find out more about the National Council on Aging visit http://www.ncoa.org. For information about forming a group in your community you can contact Lorna Olson at (712)436-2459.
